Principles – Belonging

Youth flourish with a strong sense of belonging and attachment, typically to their parents or caregivers. Grandparents, relatives, and others also may play a significant role in developing a child’s sense of belonging.

A “warm and consistent relationship with a caregiver during childhood” is important to a child’s development. Secure attachments demonstrate to the child how to build healthy relationships and become successful adults and parents.

These questions are designed to help families talk, listen, and grow together.

  1. Do you feel like you belong?  What would give you a greater sense of belonging?
  2. Why do you think people have such a strong desire to “fit in” or feel like they belong?
  3. Is someone missing from your life?  How has that affected you?
  4. How does belonging to a family or group make you feel more secure?
  5. Can you think of a time when you felt like you didn’t belong? How did that affect you?
  6. How does belonging to your family prepare you to build friendships and relationships outside the home?
  7. Why do you think kids sometimes look for belonging in unhealthy groups or activities?
  8. Can you think of when a sense of belonging could be negative?
  9. How does a warm and consistent relationship with parents or caregivers help you trust others?
  10. How can you help someone else feel like they belong—at school, extracurriculars, church, or in your friend group?

Importance of Belonging in a Young Person’s Life

  • Boosts Security and Confidence: When kids feel loved and accepted, they really start to believe in themselves.
  • Builds Trust: Healthy attachments lay the groundwork for kids to learn how to form strong, lasting relationships.
  • Helps Them Know Themselves: Belonging helps kids figure out who they are and where they fit in.
  • Prevents Loneliness: A strong sense of belonging reduces feelings of isolation or rejection.
  • Encourages Good Behavior: Kids who feel connected are way less likely to look for acceptance in risky places.
  • Builds Future Families: Secure attachments teach children how to one day be loving parents and spouses.
